Young Diver Selling Sea Urchins Finally Graduated College After Being Kara David’s Scholar
Young diver who sell sea urchins for only P2.00, now finally graduated college after one of them became Kara David’s scholar.
The young diver was featured last 2007, on “I-Witness,”a GMA News’ documentary show. One of the country’s most prominent media newscasters “Kara David” made a documentary report regarding the struggles of the families in the Islands of Silaku in Bolinao, Pangasinan whose livelihood only depend on harvesting sea urchins.
The documentary featured the Padilla family, whose daily living depends on the sea urchins, which they can gather from diving in the sea. 3 out of 6 children of Mang Edgar Padilla were helping him to harvest sea urchins.

Joselito Padilla, 10-year-old and who’s a Grade-4 student at that time ensures the forces of waves and heat of the sun on his young age just to help his father harvesting sea urchins, which is their only source of income.
Mang Edgar and the other fathers in the island would bring their children to the school located on another island. Joselito and his sibling remained honor students, despite their difficult situation for studying.
Padilla family only earns P80-100 per day by selling a sack full of sea urchins, which are sold for P140 per teaspoon in some Japanese restaurants. This situation made it hard for the residents on the island and make it difficult for Joselito to finish his studies.
Joselito still continued his studies and because of his eagerness to finish his studies, Kara David decided to take Joselito as one of their scholar in the “Project Malasakit.”
In 2017, Joselito finally finished his studies after graduating in college with a course of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation. He proves that poverty is not a hindrance in achieving your dreams and goals in life.
