Series of aftershocks occur after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Luzon.
EARTHQUAKE – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 which hit some parts of Luzon last night was followed by a series of aftershocks.
Last night, news headlines were sparked by an earthquake which struck some of the parts of Luzon. Based on a recent news report in Inquirer, series of aftershocks followed the quake as recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Based on the records of Phivolcs, two hours after the initial quake, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake followed and hit seven kilometers northwest of Tingloy, Batangas.
At 11:11 in the evening, a 4 magnitude quake followed. Moreover, it is stated in the report that at 11:13 in the evening, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck three kilometers southeast of Balayan, Batangas.
According to the reports, the series of aftershocks that followed the initial quake caused the citizens to panic. In Lucban, Quezon, the quake was at Intensity I while it was at Intensity II in Tagaytay City.
In the Province of Batangas, the patients of Batangas Medical Center in Batangas City were evacuated based on the report. Reportedly, San Pascual town suffered from power outrages.
Minor damage was caused by the incident to Taal Basilica in Taal, Batangas according to the report.
Based on a recent report in ABS-CBN News, the mayor of Taal, Mayor Pong Mercado, took to the social media the images of the basilica.
It is stated in the Facebook post of the Taal Mayor that the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Civil Security Unit, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) urgently conducted the “damage and needs (–foul word(s) removed–)sment”.
Mayor Mercado also stated that there are no reports about major damages in Taal.
“Ang lindol na ito ay isang wake-up call at warning sa ating lahat na maging handa higit lalo na sa ating bayan na maraming mga heritage houses na maaaring mapinsala,” the Taal Mayor stated in his post.
[This earthquake is a wake-up call and warning for all of us to be prepared most especially in our place wherein there are lots of heritage houses which can be destroyed.]
He stated that it is already being studied on how to strengthen the old structures and the purchase and as well as the upgrade of the facilities utilized for emergency purposes are ongoing.
The earthquake which recently hit some parts of Luzon is not the first quake to strike the country. Based on a previous news report, last month, a 3.6 magnitude quake hit Cotabato City.
