‘Erwin Valmoria Macua’, A Security Guard Graduating As Cum Laude In Cebu
A 38-year-old security guard named Erwin Valmoria Macua will graduate as cum laude at St. Theresa’s College (STC) in Cebu after 4 years of being a student and school guard at the same time.
Erwin Valmoria Macua, a security guard who is assigned at the entrance gate of STC was still on duty just hours before his graduation on Saturday (March 25, 2017). Macua is working the night shift from 7 pm to 7 am to support his family and study.
The school guard can’t contain his excitement on his graduation day, which finally ends his hardships from working at night and attending cl(–foul word(s) removed–) from 7:30 am to 4 pm. Despite his hectic schedule, he was able to balance his time with school, work, and family. He is also a consistent Dean’s Lister since 1st-year college in 2013.
Macua has been serving St. Theresa’s College for 17 years as a school guard, but today he will walk up the stage at 3 pm at the STC Theatre and will receive his diploma for a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education (BeEd), cum laude.
The school guard was not the only one in school his eldest son was 17-year-old and already in college, taking up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at the University of Cebu, as a Cebu City scholar; the second, John Clifford, 16, is Grade 10 student at the Ramon Duterte Memorial National High School in Cebu City; and the youngest, a girl, Cherise May, is only ten-months-old.
His wife Irenea was running a sari-sari store at their home in Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City, which helps to support the finances of their family.
Macua, eldest of six children was dropped off from college at the Divine Word College of Tagbilaran (now called as Holy Name University) taking up civil engineering last 1997 because his parents can’t afford to support his college.
In 2000, he was helped by his uncle to be hired in STC as a security guard. Macua got married after being hired as school guard, but still dreaming of finishing in college.
STC was only accepting female students, but in 2013, the school started to accept male students, so he decided to grab the opportunity of getting a degree. He takes up BeEd to inspire young people to study and change their lives, then gives it back to their parent who worked hard just to raise them up.
Erwin was thankful for his wife and children who fully supported him to finish his college. His wife, children, mother, and sibling will come to STC for his graduation rites today at 3 pm.
