President Duterte Signed Climate Change Deal

Climate Change Deal Signed By President Duterte

On Wednesday (March 01, 2017), President Rodrigo Duterte and Paris Agreement have signed the climate change deal after a verbal agreement.

Previously, although Cabinet members expressed their strong support for the Paris Deal, President Duterte warned that he would withdraw from the agreement anytime and argued that small companies will be affected, especially in limiting the carbon emissions.

Last year, the president said that he will be the first to withdraw if the agreement doesn’t work well. He’s also hoping that the agreement between the Philippines and other nations over climate change deal goes well.

Climate Change Commissioner Manny de Guzman was glad when Mr. Duterte has signed the Paris agreement. De Guzman also said that President Duterte fulfills his vow during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) by signing the Paris deal.

“This is a clear articulation of his marching orders from the Climate Change Commission in the succeeding months. Not only does this affirm the President’s pronouncement during his first SONA that climate change is a top priority of this administration, but also his advocacy of championing climate justice for the poorest of our poor,” said by De Guzman quoted by GMA.

De Guzman also praised Senator Loren Legarda’s perseverance in pushing the ratification of the Paris Agreement. It is expected that Office of the President will send the signed treaty in the senate on Wednesday afternoon.
