2, 000-Km Mindanao Railway Project Planned To Build By Government

The Philippine Government Is Planning To Implement The 2, 000 Kilometer Mindanao Railway Project

The Philippine government was planning to start the construction of the 2, 000 kilometer Mindanao Railway Project this 2017.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia said that the government was planning to implement the proposed 2, 000-kilometer railway project in Mindanao, which was close to the heart of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Last week, the feasibility study for the P128,1-billion Mindanao railway system was conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), according to Pernia. He also said that Jica’s study will be completed within the first quarter of 2017, in coordination with the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).

“The feasibility study is about to be completed. It’s likely to get started in terms of implementation this year because that is going to be an iconic project, a major project, and of course close to the heart of the President. So we need to get that started this year,” said by Pernia quoted by Inquirer.

Neda chief said that the Investment Coordination Committee will receive the presentation of the feasibility study conducted by Jica. Investment Coordination Committee will still study the potential rate of return and social benefits of the railway system.

Pernia also said that countries such as Japan, Malaysia, and China were interested in financing the construction of the railway project in Mindanao. The Philippine government might also consider the co-financing with World Bank, China-led Infrastructure Investment Bank, and Asian Development Bank.
