Senator De Lima On Her Possible Arrest: ‘I Don’t Deserve This’
‘I don’t deserve this’ is what Senator Leila De Lima said on her impending arrest over drug-related charges filed by the higher court.
On Friday (February 17, 2017), Municipal Trial Court charged the senator with violating the Republic Act 9165, which Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 for her alleged involvement in the illegal drug proliferation at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
De Lima said that it was totally unfair to suffer the same fate she caused to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The former President was barred from leaving the country last 2011 despite the Supreme Court She also explained that she never abused her authority as a senator, so she doesn’t deserve to be detained in jail.
“Hindi po ako umabuso sa aking posisyon. Kung ano man po ang mga ginawa ko noon na mga paggawa ng aking mga trabaho, ng aking mandate, ginawa ko lang po only because ‘yun po ang dapat gawin base sa kaso, sa mga ebidensya,” said by De Lima quoted by GMA.
The senator also said that her critics have no basis for the accusations against her. De Lima was linked to the illegal drug trade happened at the national penitentiary, a few years ago, while she was still the justice secretary.
She also said that she doesn’t commit any acts of persecution. The senator also explained that she’s not taking advantage of her authority as Secretary of Justice, but several NBP inmates have already testified against her proving her involvement in illegal drug activities.
