The Forfeiture Of Imelda Marcos’ Jewelry Collection Assert By The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court (SC) assert the forfeiture of former first lady Imelda Marcos’ jewelry collection, left by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

The forfeiture of Imelda’s jewelry collection was upheld by SC. The jewelry collection was left by the Marcoses at the Malacañang Palace in 1986 during the EDSA People Power Revolution, which ousts Marcos from the presidency.

Last 2014, Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno, the First Division of the high court released a 21-pages decision ordering the forfeiture of 400-piece jewelry collection of Imelda in Malacañang.

The petition filed Imelda Marcos and her daughter Irene Marcos-Araneta was already dismissed by the Court. SC has dismissed the anti-graft court’s finding filed by the Marcoses on the jewelry collection, which was alleged part of their ill-gotten wealth.

“Petitioners failed to satisfactorily show that the properties were lawfully acquired; hence, the prima facie presumption that they were unlawfully acquired prevails,” reads by ruling quoted by Philstar.

The jewelry collection of Imelda was estimated amounting of more than $150, 000. The petition filed by Marcoses was declined by the Supreme Court for there are no trials or hearing, which proves that they have legally acquired the said jewelry.

The Supreme Court also favored and justified Sandiganbayan’s order to make the Malacañang jewelry collection to be a subject to forfeiture. Marcos family earned only $304, 372.43 for 20 years during their leadership from 1966 to 1986.

The jewelry was stored in the vaults of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas together with the two other sets jewelry seized from Imelda in 1986, such as the Hawaii Collection and Roumeliotes Collection.
