Can Sea Animals Predicts Earthquakes? Do You Believe That They Can Foresee Upcoming Calamities
A dead oarfish was found in Mindanao before an earthquake had struck Surigao Del Norte, can animals really foretell upcoming earthquakes?
On Friday night (February 10, 2017), an earthquake struck Surigao Del Norte, which shaken social media users. Netizens linked the to the incident happened 2 days before the earthquake struck the province and concluding that it was already a sign for the incoming calamity.
On Wednesday (February 08, 2017), dead oarfish was found on the coast of Agusan Del Norte. Fishermen caught the 10-foot long oarfish, which is a deep-sea creature. Netizens were arguing if deep-sea creatures ended up in shallow water really predict earthquakes.
“It’s theoretically possible because when an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically charged ions to be released into the water,” said by Rachel Grant, a lecturer in animal biology quoted by MSN.
Seismologists also explained that deep-sea species living near the bottom of the sea were more sensitive to the activities and movements on the sea surface. Previously, dozens of oarfish occurs in the shores of Japan before the devastating earthquake in Haiti and Chile.
The appearance of oarfish was also linked to the destructive earthquake, which causes a devastating tsunami in Japan that destroys properties last 2011. Oarfish are prophets of doom, according to Japanese folklore.
Some scientists disagree that appearance of deep-sea creatures in shallow waters was not followed by earthquakes. These instances were also disproved Hiroshi Tajihi, of the Kobe Earthquake Centre explaining those instances were just an old superstition and there’s no proof of the relations between earthquake and occurrence of oarfish.
Grant also said that they will also look the possibility of deep-sea creatures appearance prior to an earthquake.
