Residents In New Zealand Evacuate Coastal Areas After Tsunami Alert Was Raised

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand on Monday (November 14, 2016), residents in coastal areas evacuates after a tsunami alert was activated.

The Christchurch in the South Island was struck by a strong earthquake and felt throughout the country. The earthquake causes damage and casualties, according to the report. Due to the earthquake, a potentially destructive tsunami on the coastal area was expected.

On the South Island coastal towns and along the east coast of the North Islands was under a tsunami alert. Residents from seaside properties were advised to leave the area. Emergency workers and police officers went door-to-door in tsunami-prone areas to evacuate residents.

The ministry of civil defence, responsible for emergency management in New Zealand sad in a bulletin that 16 feet destructive tsunami were possible to heat the coastal areas. Two meters high early waves have already hit seaside properties but the civil defence said that those waves could intensify and become a life-threatening tsunami.
