Duterte tempted – President Rodrigo Duterte said that he is tempted to declare martial law in the Philippines because of the illegal drug trade crisis in the country.

In a report by ABS-CBN, Duterte, during his visit to the Beit Yaacov Synagogue in Makati City, said in his speech that he wants to stop the narcopolitics in the Philippines.

According to him, there are thousands of barangay captain who were manufacturing illegal drugs that’s why, he said, he is sometimes tempted to declare martial law in the Philippines.

“There are 6,000 barangay captains doing their own thing, manufacturing sh@bu. How am I supposed to deal with… sometimes I am tempted, really, to declare martial law. But it is not feasible, they say, well, fine,” Duterte said as quoted in the report.

Martial was first declared by former President Ferdinand Marcos in 1972.

Duterte added that narcopolitics are the reason why he declared a state of lawlessness in the country.

“That’s why I declared a state of lawlessness, because narcopolitics has entered my country,” Duterte stated.

The said state of lawlessness vio1ence was declared on September after a tragic explosion that happened in his hometown, Davao City, taking the lives of 14 people and left over 60 people hurt.

The report added that the Duterte said that the declaration is different from the martial law as there will be no curfews and the writ of habeas corpus won’t be suspended.

The President added that the said declaration will only be lifted if he feels that the country is “already safe” from the threat of the illegal drug trade and terr0rism.

On the start of his Presidency, Duterte declared a war on drugs which is part of his promise during his campaign period for the May 2016 Elections to stop illegal drug and corruption in the Philippines.
