Former Vice President Jejomar Binay charged with graft.
Former Vice President Jejomar Binay was charged with graft falsification and violation of the government procurement law charges by the Office of the Ombudsman over Makati City Hall Building II project.
According to GMA News report, the Ombudsman charged Binay on Thursday morning with violation of Section 3 (e) of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, violation Republic Act 9184 or the Government Procurement Reform Act, and Falsification of Public Documents under Article 171 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC).
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales said that former Makati City mayor manipulated the bidding process to ensure the project to MANA Architecture and Design Company and Hilmarc’s Construction Company.
Morales also said that the construction of P2.28 billion-parking building started despite the absence of required documents for the construction, including detailed engineering and approved design.
Reacting to the charges, Binay’s spokesperson Joey Salgado said in a press statement that he is ready to face the accusations to clear his name.
Salgado also blamed Morales for filing the cases, saying that it is a “diversionary move” to protect her political interests.
“Clearly this is a diversionary move intended to shield her (Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales) political patrons from public indignation,” he said.
Salgado also accused Morales as the protector of previous administration, Liberal Party which was headed by former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino.
Aside from the charges, Binay is also facing five plunder cases before the Ombudsman. One of the five cases is still in connection with the anomalous Makati building.
Jejomar Binay previously ran in the Presidential Race last May, but lost to President Rodrigo Duterte.
