Senators who Supported Sen. Koko Pimentel

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel Jr. will run as Senate President in the 17th Congress as he revealed the list of senators who backed him up for the presidency of the Senate. Sen. Koko Pimentel, the only senator from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) is one of the strongest candidate for Senate Presidency against Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.

The future ruling party PDP-Laban will be joined by the country’s largest and most prominent party, the Liberal Party formed a “supermajority” which emerged in the Senate. The possible election of Sen. Pimentel will give the President-elect Rodrigo Duterte control of Congress and assured the support for his legislative agenda, one of them is a shift towards federalism.

Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, president of the PDP-Laban that fielded Duterte as its standard-bearer in the May 9 elections, is likely to be voted Senate President in the 17th Congress.

Senate Pres. Franklin Drilon of Liberal Party and Sen. Vicente Sotto III of the Nationalists Peoples Coalition decided to join forces with Pimentel to form the supermajority of 18 senators.

Based upon previous Congress, only 13 members are required to form the majority in the 24-member Senate. In the Lower House the PDP-Laban and other political party already formed the supermajority to support Rep. Alvarez as House speaker. In order to formalize the coalitions in the House of Representativs, Congressman Feliciano Belmonte flew to Davao City and made a courtesy call with Pres. Duterte.
