Incoming DepEd Sec Briones Seeks P45-B Additional DepEd Fund For ALS

Yesterday, the incoming Education Secretary Leonor Briones restated that the new government must increase the allocated budget for education. Briones reiterated that the increase of the budget is must to assure that those outside the formal learning system will not be left behind.

During a press conference, Briones highlighted the request P45 billion additional budget will be proposed for the Alternative Learning System (ALS). And a total of P400 Billion budget will be allocated to Education in 2017.

She is known to be one of those who is supporting the K-to-12 Program, but she noted that “not all can be accommodated in the program”. Hence, a bigger budget is a must for the education sector, especially in supporting the Alternative Learning System, she said. “Provision has to be made for ALS which will ensure that no one will be really left behind.”

In her first briefing as the incoming DepEd Chief, Briones said that achieving an “Education for all” goal convinced her to accept the DepEd post. “It is an opportunity and a tremendous challenge for all who believe in education to contribute to reforms and put into practice our lifetime advocacies,” she said.

She served as the Commission on Audit secretary, University of the Philippines vice president for finance and administration, treasurer of the Philippines. Briones was also chosen as the president of the Freedom from Debt Coalition. She was also the lead convenor of Social Watch Philippines.

Briones said that she had not even met Duterte when the offer was made. She also expressed her gratefulness to Duterte for choosing her for the position.
