Chinese president Xi Jinping recently made a statement that China hopes to strengthen relations with the Philippines as it was being derailed over the territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea region.

According to GMA News, China’s Foreign Ministry said that President Xi already sent President Rodrigo Duterte a letter congratulating him on his victory in the May 9 elections. It is also stated that the two countries already had a long history of “friendly exchanges and deep traditional friendship.”

“The friendly, stable and healthy development of Sino-Philippine relations accords with the basic interests of both countries and both peoples,” said President Xi as quoted in the statement.

He also expressed that both the Philippines and China were responsible in deepening the cooperation of the countries.

“(I) hope both sides can work hard to push Sino-Philippine relations back onto a healthy development track,” said Xi.

The Philippines and China have been in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea, together with other neighboring countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

The Philippines already raised an international tribunal in the Hague that made the tension rose.

Now, the Philippines is searching a clarification of the United Nations maritime laws that could probably disable the claims of China to about 90 percent of the whole South China Sea. But, according to the report, China has rejected the authority of the court.

The South China Sea is a waterway wherein about $5 trillion worth of shipping trade p(–foul word(s) removed–) the region every year.

Will the relationship between China and the Philippines become stronger as the Chinese President hopes?

What would be the move of the new President Duterte regarding this issue?
