Duterte-Marcos Tandem: Latest Tandem for the 2016 National Elections

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., is the latest tandem for the highly anticipated 2016 national elections as both leaders shared advocacy of changing the system of government of the Republic of the Philippines. The speculations of a possible Duterte-Marcos tandem first came out when Sen. Bongbong Marcos appeared as guest of Mayor Duterte’s “Gikan sa Masa” local weekly TV program.

The visit of the Senator as guest to Mayor Duterte’s TV program sparks speculation that the two had firmed plans for the May 2016 national elections.

Both politicians are considered as strong advocates of federalism which Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has been pushing in his nationwide tour in the past few months. The Mayor of Davao insisted that his trips around the country were a campaign for federalism and how it would benefit the country if such a new system would be put in place.

During the TV guesting of Senator Marcos, he revealed and declared in the TV program that he admired and idolized Mayor Duterte for his efforts. He was quoted as saying “I just follow Mayor Duterte. He is my mentor when it comes to politics,” Marcos said.

Mayor Duterte on his part shrugged off insinuations of his reported running for national posts and his possible tandem with Sen. Bongbong Marcos or any other politicians in 2016.

The popular Davao City mayor also added that he is already 70 years old and not in good physical condition for a presidential candidate and has no money to run a nationwide campaign for the highest office in the land.
