MEXICO CITY —following the disappearance of 43 teachers’ college students last year, authorities say they have captured a former police official involved in the case.
According to the released government statement, Francisco Salgado Valladares had been hiding in the homes of relatives in the states of Guerrero and Morelos.
Investigators learned that the suspect was getting together in the city of Cuernavaca and detained him in a vehicle that was approaching the gathering.
The statement also added Thursday that Salgado Valladares is suspected of kidnaping and organized crime.
Salgado Valladares was a former deputy chief for operations in the city of Iguala and allegedly ordered police to hand over 13 of the missing students to a drug gang in September.

Authorities concluded that the missing students were massacred by the gang, however, relatives continue to doubt the official account.
