Cyclist Wouter Weylandt from Belgium was declared dead after the crashed. It came after a down-hill crash and fell at high speed  at about 25km (15.5 miles) from the finish line of the stage which starts from Reggio Emilia to Rapallo.

Paramedics tried to revived the cyclist by using CPR and cardiac m(–foul word(s) removed–)age but their effort was not enough. Wouter laid bloodied and motionless as the paramedics came to the rescue.

The 26-year-old cyclist was the first death victim of a major cycling race for the last 16 years.  Giovanni Tredici, the doctor who was present at the incident was quoted as saying “Despite immediate treatment there was nothing we could do”.

 

The doctor further adds that “He died from a fracture to the front of his skull. We arrived at the scene 30 seconds after the crash. We tried for 40 minutes to resuscitate him”.

Wouter Weylandt a member of the Leopard Trek Team was one of the vital player for their campaign at Giro d’Italia. He was a former winner of the 3rd stage of the 2010 Giro d’Italia.

Cycling greats from around the world had expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Wouter Weylandt. Seven-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong was quoted as saying in his twitter accounts “I’m shocked and saddened. May he rest in peace.”

Other cyclists who had died at Giro d’Italia were Orfeo Ponsin died in 1952, Juan Manuel Santisteban in 1976 and Emilio Ravasio in 1986. Due to the incidents cycling governing bodies were now beefing up the security measures in placed before moving on to start any cycling event.
