Despite the Nuclear explosion that happened in Japan, which brought the danger of radiation to the people. French power giant EDF announced that they will still continue to build a new reactors in Unite Kingdom.
According to Vincent de Rivaz, one of the officials of EDF said that lesson must be learned from what happened to Japan but the construction of reactor must continue.
EDF has (–foul word(s) removed–)ured that they already have made a review back-up systems and emergency plans for the existing UK plants if something wrong or malfunction will happen.
After what happened to Japan, many countries are already reviewing nuclear strategy to ensure the safety of it.
Just last week, the approval for new nuclear power stations in China has been suspended by its government following the incident in Fukushima Dai chi nuclear power plant.
Seven of the oldest reactors in Germany were also shut down, after the announcement of “measured exit” by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This is to prevent any problem that may occur in the future.
To ensure safety for the people of UK, its government has made a special report into the lessons of the Japanese disaster. There initial findings is said to be published this coming May.
Groups who are against this plan of rebuilding a new reactor have appealed to the government to suspend the approval, not until the report is published.
Mr. de Rivaz said in one of his interviews in the Andrew Marr show, that he commended the “clear-headed and calm reaction” of the government, regulators and local communities in United Kingdom to the Japan nuclear crisis.
He also explained that the situation of the two countries is very different and that we just have to learn a lesson from what happened to Japan and apply it in the new plants to be built.
In one of his statement addressed to the people of UK he said that “Nuclear is not a single solution to the UK’s energy needs, but there is no solution without nuclear”.
