Operation Odyssey Dawn: Coalition Forces War Against Libya Has Begun

Coalition Forces Attacked Libya
Tomahawk Launch against Libya

The first attacked against Libya was made by French fighter jets which destroys four tanks and returned to base. An hour later the U.S. and U.K. have used cruise missiles and targeted major military installations in Libya. The U.S. have led the coalition forces against the army of Col. Muammar Gaddafi.

The use of force against Libya was carried out after the United Nations Security Council approved resolution 1973 stating that No Fly Zone shall be imposed in Libya,  and authorize all necessary measures excluding troops on the ground to protect the civilians from further attacked by Libyan Forces loyal to Gaddafi.

There are at least 110 tomahawk cruise missiles fired from U.S. and U.K. ships targeting Libya’s anti-aircraft missiles and radar. The US have used tw0 destroyers, three submarines and two other ships, while the UK contributed one submarine.

Vice Admiral William Gortney, director of the US Joint Chief of Staff was quoted as saying  “This will allow us to penetrate a medium-to-high threat environment without putting air crews at risk,” in referring to the attacked by US Naval Forces against Libya.

“It’s a first phase of a multi-phase operation” to enforce the UN resolution and prevent the Libyan regime from using force “against its own people”, he said. The Operation Odyssey Dawn was lead by Admiral Samuel Locklear from USS Mount Whitney. He is the commander of all the US Naval Forces in Europe and Africa.

America’s firepower in the Meditteranean was enormous, it includes guided-missile destroyers  USS Barry and USS Stout, amphibious warship USS Kearsarge and USS Ponce, and a command-and-control ship, the USS Mount Whitney, the flagship of Operation Odyssey Dawn. Supporting them are fourteen other coalition forces.

Meanwhile Muammar Gaddafi have called the attacked as barbaric and he is calling for other Arab nations to support him in his fight against the western dominance. US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Canada, Lithuania and other countries including the Arab countries were part of the said coalition against Gaddafi’s regime.
