Brillante Mendoza tried this genre of movie
Director Brillante Mendoza admitted that doing a wholesome movie is a challenge for him as this is not like what he previously did.
Brillante is known for a specific genre of movie. In previous years, his projects featured themes that are not suitable for young viewers. Although he has themes for adult audiences, he received recognition for his works at international film festivals.
His recent project Apag is funded by Hong Kong Film Festival. In a recent interview, based on the article in PEP, Direk Brillante shared that he was told to do a movie without s=x, violence, and politics.
“Di ba, napaka-challenging para sa akin nun? Considering na puro ganyan ang mga pelikula ko, di ba?” Brillante Mendoza said. The director added that this is the biggest challenge for him.
The movie is a family drama and as this feature a Kapampangan family, food and religion are also incorporated into the film. He said that people in Pampanga are known for being religious and food lovers.
Direk Brillante said that the version he sent for Hong Kong Film Fest and other festivals is a wholesome version. “Meron akong version na para sa Metro Manila Film Festival. Director’s Cut ito na hindi ito ang ipinalabas sa festival sa Hong Kong at sa ibang film festivals,” he revealed.
He added that this is a unique one because it is not like other movies before. The director stressed that what will be shown in the MMFF is the Director’s cut.
Direk Brillante Mendoza said that he made this movie as a tribute to his fellow Kapampangans. This is the reason why the cast members are from Pampanga and they used the Kapampangan language in their dialogues.
