JOPAY: Mayonnaise Frontman Monty Reveals Story Behind Hit Song

Mayonnaise Frontman Monty Macalino Reveals Story Behind Hit Song ‘Jopay’

JOPAY – Mayonnaise frontman Monty Macalino revealed the story behind their hit song ‘Jopay.’

Nearly 2 decades after Mayonnaise first released “Jopay,” the song has once again gone viral on social media. The song is one of the official soundtracks for the 2022 film “Ngayon Kaya,” starring Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez. It was made available on Netflix in the latter half of 2022, and it has since become popular.

Early this year, TikTok creator Kosang Marlon had a hilarious rendition of the song that was popular on social media. Lots of netizens imitated how Marlon sang “Wag ka nang mawala” lyrics of “Jopay.” Others said they are experiencing LSS or last-song syndrome because of his hilarious cover.

But what is the story behind this popular song?

According to the band’s vocalist and “Jopay” songwriter Monty Macalino, Jopay Paguia-Zamora of the girl group S*xBomb Girls was the inspiration for the song. Years ago, during the Lenten season, Monty claimed to have witnessed the dancer crying.

“Pagbukas ko ng TV nakita ko yung isang S*xBomb dancer (Jopay) umiiyak sabi ko, ‘ba’t kaya umiiyak ‘to ‘di ba nasayaw lang ‘to?’ So pumasok sa utak ko parang ‘ayaw ko siya makitang umiyak, ayoko siyang makitang malungkot,’” the singer said in an interview with an online video producer.

“So ginawa ko talaga yung kanta specifically for Jopay ng S*xbomb dancers…”

“I wanted to create a song na would make as if we have a connection. Even if she doesn’t know me. Even if I haven’t seen her face to face,” Monty added.

Monty Macalino has since grown fond of the dancer. Monty also admitted that he would regularly watch Jopay on “Eat Bulaga‘s” studio in Broadway Centrum in Quezon City.

“Pumupunta [at] pumipila ako doon [sa studio at] manood ako ng Eat Bulaga. Nakikiupo kami sa Kurimaw (band) kami ng kaibigan ko,” he said.

Monty also said that he gave Jopay the initial demo outside the “Eat Bulaga” studio. Because “Jopay” deviates from the rock and metal genres, Monty was hesitant to include it while they were selecting a song for the debut album.

The song was later played by Mayonnaise in 2005 then also made a music video for it. This was well-known on the radio and well-liked by many. Monty also said the dancer was supposed to appear in the video, but she was busy with a show in Japan.
