Sacristan Arrested after He Mauls Priest Who Refused to Let Him Lead Mass
Police arrested a sacristan after he allegedly mauls the priest who refused to let him lead the mass in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
The person in charge of looking after the sacristy, the church, and its belongings is known as a sacristan or church servant. Sacristans support the priest, the liturgical ministers, and the liturgy itself in their roles.
The sacristan often positions himself or herself in the sacristy after the liturgy has begun in case anything extra is needed. Sacristans need to be reliable, mature, responsible, quick learners, and well-organized.
Meanwhile, a sacristan at Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay, was detained after assaulting a priest who refused to preside over mass in their church. According to the report, the suspect is 40-year-old Elizar Sedenio.
For beating the victim, Father Leo Pugot, 38, of San Isidro Labrador Parish in Nazareth in the municipality of Kabasalan, the suspect is charged with physical assault. The event took place following the victim’s noontime mass, according to Police Col. Albert Larubis, director of the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office (PPO).
Sedenio allegedly asked the priest beforehand if he might celebrate mass on Sunday. He wasn’t a clergyman, therefore the victim complained. After mass, the suspect allegedly approached the priest and hit him in the head and other places on his body, shocking everyone in the room.
Witnesses who requested for assistance at the barangay led to the suspect’s capture. It is well known that the suspect assists with church cleaning in addition to serving as the sacristan.
