MMDA Eyes to Implement Stricter Rules on Use of e-Vehicles
MMDA is planning impose stricter policy on the use of e-Bikes and e-Scooters in the National Capital Region.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is an agency of the Republic of the Philippines implementing the planning, monitoring and coordinative functions along the road concerning purely local matters.
The agency covers the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, Pasay, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasig, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, Parañaque, Valenzuela, Malabon, Taguig, Navotas and San Juan and the municipality of Pateros.
MMDA’s Traffic Discipline Office for Enforcement head Victor Nuñez wants to tighter the rules and regulations on the use of bicycles and electric scooters. He explained that e-vehicles must be used only on barangay roads and bicycle lanes,
Nuñez explained that these e-vehicles should always give way to oncoming traffic. They were also prohibited to use the middle lane of the major roads. The measures aim to ensure the safety of all motorists along the road.
“The road operation of e-vehicles…must be limited to bicycle lanes, barangay roads, and they must always give the right of way to oncoming traffic. They’re not allowed to pass in the middle of the major thoroughfares,” Nuñez said.
The MMDA executive also requires that e-vehicles with a maximum speed capacity of 50 kilometers per hour or more must also be registered under the Land Transportation Office (LTO). Users will be also required to obtain a valid driver’s license.
The official wants to ensure road safety as public transport returns to its 100% capacity and face-to-face classes are about to resume within a few weeks.
“Now, since mass public transport is back to its 100% capacity and face-to-face classes are about to resume in a couple of weeks, we know that many students might use these e-bikes and e-scooters, so we just want to promote road safety,” Nuñez added.
