Pres. Duterte Withdraws from Vice Presidential Bid in 2022
DUTERTE – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte spoke on his decision to retire from politics after his term as president ends in 2022.
Currently, the filing of the Certificate of Candidacies (COCs) is ongoing. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) set October 8, 2021 as the deadline for the filing of candidacies. Several incumbent politicians that were nominated for a certain position and accepted their nomination have made their bid official.
On the other side, there are those who changed their mind – one of them is President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. He was nominated by the PDP-Laban Cusi wing for vice president. The 76-year-old Chief Executive accepted the nomination.
Initially, Pres. Duterte was vocal about his plan to retire and go home to Davao City after his term as the country’s Chief Executive ends in 2022. However, amid the President’s explanation, it only challenged his party mates more to persistently call for him to run for a national post in the next election.
However, the President’s acceptance of the nomination for vice president gained different reactions from the people. Some expressed support to his bid while others are visibly not in favor of it.
Recently, an unexpected announcement crossed the surface. Pres. Duterte announced that he will retire from politics in 2022. He withdrew his bid for the vice presidency in the next poll.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the 76-year-old President explained that his decision came “after giving a serious thought on the sentiment” of the people. He cited surveys, forums, caucuses, and meetings.
According to Pres. Duterte, it is time to give way for a new set of leaders but he hopes that his projects would be given continuity. He hopes that the next administration will build on the country’s “gains” in the fight against several national issues.
Instead of the former Davao City Mayor, it was Senator Bong Go, his former longtime-aide, who filed his candidacy for vice president as the bet of PDP-Laban Cusi wing.
