CBCP Speaks on Supporting Voter Education Campaign for Election 2022
CBCP – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines spoke on whether or not it is planning to endorse candidates in 2022 Election.
Today starts the filing of candidacies to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) for the Election 2022. A week prior to the filing period set by the poll body, several politicians have already announced their intention to run for a specific position. Some people from other fields will also be taking a political race next election.
Most of the presidential candidates are supported by political parties. They were nominated and they accepted the nomination of the parties that pledged support in their bid.
Amid the different talks about the Election 2022, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) expressed its support on the “One Godly Vote” voter education campaign.
Meanwhile, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, CBCP clarified that it is not endorsing candidates in the Election 2022. With regards to the voter education campaign it supports, Executive Secretary Fr. Jerome Secillano said that they only want to evangelize politics and put Christ at the center of it.
Fr. Secillano clarified that the evangelization of politics is their “only goal” in supporting the “One Godly Vote” campaign and they are not endorsing candidates in the upcoming election. He stressed that it is “not in the nature of Catholic Church” to endorse political candidates.
The filing of candidacy’s deadline is on October 8, 2021. Several incumbent politicians and those who want to join the political race next year have already filed their candidacies to COMELEC while some have yet to decide such as the likes of Vice President Leni Robredo.
The Vice President is called to run for president but she has continually stressed that her goal is for the unity ticket of the opposition and she does not mind giving way if needed. However, amid the pursuit of the Vice President, several politicians have already announced their bid for president.
