Senator Hontiveros Calls DOLE to Investigare Reported Labor Abuses Among Food Delivery Riders
Senator Risa Hontiveros is urging DOLE to investigate the reported labor abuses experienced by the food delivery riders.
On Monday (July 19, 2021), the labor department is urged to probe the alleged incidents of “labor abuses” suffered by Food Panda riders. The employees complained that whenever they are embroiled is tantamount to a day they have no income.
The lawmaker made the statement after Food Panda reportedly suspends the delivery riders who opposed the company’s wage policy for 10 years. The riders protested after the firm allegedly reduced their earnings to as low as P20 per ride.
“Nananawagan ako sa DOLE na aksyunan agad ang hinaing ng ating delivery riders na nakararanas ng panggigipit sa mobile app operators. Bawat araw na sila ay nababalahaw ay katumbas ng isang araw na wala silang maiuuwing kita sa kanilang pamilya,” Hontiveros said.
Foodpanda Philippines explained that the riders have been suspended for allegedly breaking the agreement. The alleged violation on the agreement causes disruptions in the operations affecting customers and restaurant-partners.
Hontiveros also instructed the labor department to look the working condition to ensure the protection of the delivery riders. She also urged the agency to release guidelines and labor standards for the welfare of delivery workers.
