Female Coast Guard Members to Be Sent as Special Radio Operators in WPS
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) female members will be sent to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) to become voice of peace and as special radio operators.
Angels of the Sea Class 01-2021 had 81 female PCG members finish their first all-women special radio operators school. The women were trained for up to two weeks to improve their communication skills in the areas of maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, and maritime security at sea.

According to the PCG, using women’s voices in communication with Chinese and other foreign ships that trespass on the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone in the West Philippine Sea will lessen tension and avert any confrontation.
PCG deputy commander for operations, Vice Admiral Leopoldo Laroya, stated they cherish the female radio operators on their ships, especially when talking with foreign ships. She wants the Angels of the Sea to become a voice for peaceful, rule-based order at sea, particularly along our country’s vulnerable maritime borders, she said.
Laroya expressed his hope that the new graduates will contribute to effective operations by “swaying those who are listening” with their voices. The radio operators school at PCG used to be solely for men, according to the PCG.
