Magat Dam Warns Residents of Possible Flooding After Releasing Excess Water Again
Magat Dam warned the residents over northern Luzon for possible flooding after releasing excess water again.
On Saturday (November 28, 2020), Magat Dam opened another spillway gate to release excess waters around 179 cubic meters per second or equivalent to 895 drums of water, which could trigger flooding over Gamu and Aurora in Isabela.
The Dam Discharge Warning Operation of NIA-MARIIS released a notice that Magat Dam opened the spillway radial gate number 3 for about one meter. Around 9 am, the gate has been opened for two meters releasing around 393 cubic meters per second.
The dam discharged a total of 786 cubic meters per second or 3,930 drums of water after opening the two gates. NIA-MARIIS discharged the excess water to prevent the chance of possible flooding.
The state weather bureau PAGASA’s Hydrological forecast shows that the Upper Cagayan basin area including the tributaries of Ganano and Magat have reached “above alert level” wherein flooding is possible. Magat River is a major tributary of Cagayan River.
Over a week ago, Cagayan and Isabela have experienced a severe flooding due to the effects of Typhoon Ulysses. The local government unit said that it was the greatest flood in 45 years.
