BOC Cebu Confiscates Two Containers Of Smuggled Cigarettes
BOC – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Cebu seized two containers of smuggled cigarettes from China.
According to SunStar, the seized cigarettes had an estimated street value of P88.1 million.
The shipments, which were declared to contain umbrellas and various home furniture, arrived at Pier 6 last month. The inward foreign manifest reported that both of the shipments were consigned to GRR Trading. This was their third attempt to smuggle cigarettes from China to Cebu.
The said consignee was also responsible for the two shipments that were seized by the BOC-Cebu within the last two weeks.
The bureau added that due to heightened border protection measures, this series of smuggling attempts were foiled. It added that the Port of Cebu’s anti-smuggling drive was enhanced thanks to the installation of a portal X-ray machine there.
Charlito Martin Mendoza, Acting BOC-Cebu District Collector also said that he issued pre-lodgement control orders (PLCOs) against the said shipments on August 28, based on the report.
PLCO is a written order which allows customs officials to exercise jurisdiction over an imported shipment before lodgement of goods declaration or when no goods declaration is lodged.
The first container contained 851 master cases of “Mighty” cigarettes while the other contained 911 master cases of “Mighty”, “Fort”, and “Marvel” cigarettes.
Mendoza issued warrants of seizure and detention against the shipments for violating Section 1113 (f), (i), and (l) of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
