Over 124,000 OFWs Repatriated Amid COVID-19 Pandemic – DFA

DFA – The Department of Foreign Affairs repatriated over 124,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) amid coronavirus pandemic.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has repatriated lots of OFWs affected by the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The government assured all OFW that they will do everything to bring them back to the Philippines.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) said all Pinoys and Foreign nationals arriving from other countries are required to undergo a swab rest and 14-day quarantine.

Based on a report from Inquirer, DFA reported that they have repatriated a total of 124,717 OFWs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement, the department said 39.8% (49,655) of the repatriated Pinoys are sea-based while 60.2% (75,062) are land-based.

DFA said the number of repatriated OFWs breached the 124,000 mark after over 8924 OFWs traveled home this week. 3660 OFWs arrived from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They also welcomed the return of 2349 seafarers from Spain, Italy, Singapore, Japan, Bangladesh, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.

“Through the help of its various Foreign Service Posts and the Filipino community abroad, the DFA was able to facilitate the repatriation of stranded overseas Filipinos from remote locations such as Mongolia, Palau, and the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean,” DFA said.

According to the report, the department is also closely working with the PH embassies in Tehran and Beirut to bring back the distressed Pinoys in Uzbekistan and Lebanon.

“The DFA remains unwavering in its commitment to bringing home our distressed nationals abroad wherever they are in the world,” the DFA said.
