Filipinos in Italy Donates Blood as Their Contribution Amid COVID-19 Crisis
Some Filipinos in Italy donate a bag of their blood as a contribution to saving lives after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) struck the country.
In the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Italy, the blood supply to hospitals were affected. Besides the strict implementation of nationwide quarantine, there is also a risk for blood donors because hospitals are full of patients.
According to the report of ABS-CBN News, there is currently no adequate blood supply in hospitals because regular donations from voluntary donors have been delayed following the lockdown. But Filipinos, regardless of risk and still choose to help others by donating blood.
Filipino Blood Donors of Milan took the lead in responding to a hospital’s appeal. This Filipino organization with the help of founder Tessie Acuña who is also an active donor is an example of the courage and kindness of Filipinos in the midst of the crisis.
Although some Filipinos have experienced discrimination since the virus spread, it has not been a hindrance to continue their mission to save lives.
“Ang bawat patak ng dugo na kanilang inaaalay ay magdudugtong ng buhay sa mga may malulubhang sakit. Para sa akin, iisa lamang ang kahulugan nito, sila’y mga taong may ginintuang puso, mga tunay na bayani sa isip sa puso at sa gawa,” Acuña said.
Meanwhile, Rei Collado, also a Filipino, did not hesitate and bravely donated amid the dreadful coronavirus in Italy. Collado said this was his way of paying the good of the nation he considered second home.
“Sa mga biyayang natanggap ko at ng pamilya ko dahil sa bansang ito ay naramadaman ko na kahit ganitong paraan lang ay masuklian ko ang mga bagay na nagawa ng bansang ito para sa akin at sa pamilya ko,” Collado said.
Based on the report, the FBDM mentor and head of the Transfusion Center of Policlinico di Milano Dr. Gianfranco Contino had an appeal for Filipinos during the Italian health crisis.
“Le donazione del sangue non si possono fermare. Vi invito a non desistere continuare donare il sangue. Venite a donare il sangue. Ci troviamo in una situazione di carenza di emergenza sangue che si protrara fino a Giugno,” Contino said it Italian.
