Research Done By Health Experts Suggest COVID-19 May Cause Testicular Damage
HEALTH RESEARCH ON COVID-19 – Aside from common symptoms of COVID-19, male patients may need to get tested for semen quality.
The coronavirus outbreak had become a pandemic threat. As such, millions worldwide are affected and nations have been placed under lockdown as a countermeasure against the virus.
Previously, patients infected with the virus showed additional symptoms such as diarrhea. Now, Chinese experts found that infected men who want to have children or maintain a quality sex-life should get additional tests.
According to an article from Global Times, those with a history of COVID-19, especially those with fertility needs, should get infected after recovery.
With this, Professor Li Yufeng of the Center for Reproductive Medicine of Tongji Medical College in Wuhan stated the coronavirus cells invade cells in the body such as:
- testes
- small intestine
- kidney
- heart
- thyroid
Moreover, this meant that male reproductive functions may be affected. This is due to a large amount of ACE2 being found in the Testes.
As per the article, COVID-19 could invade cells through the combination of spike protein (S protein) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), causing tissue damage.
However, no research has confirmed claims that COVID-19 affects male fertility. Although, COVID-19 is highly similar to the SARS virus that causes severe damage to the testes.
Meanwhile, the team experts led by Professor Li Yufeng stated that “theoretically” the new coronavirus could cause testicular damage. Furthermore, sperm production, androgen synthesis, and overall quality of fertility.
