Weekly Cash Allowance for Displaced Workers Proposed by House Leader
A House leader proposed a P1,000 per week cash allowance for displaced workers in Metro Manila affected by the enhanced community quarantine.
Previously, President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the National Capital Region under an enhanced community quarantine to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease in the Philippines. The measure has been made to ensure the public safety but it also affects the financial status of many Filipino workers.
Recently, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, the lawmaker who proposed to place entire Metro Manila in lockdown said that his suggestion includes the provision of subsistence allowance for both contractual and informal workers.
“Incentives for compliance will be an unconditional cash transfer for income support for food allowance of P1,000 [per] week for four weeks for 3.4 million families” in Metro Manila,” Salceda said.
Salceda said that indigent families should receive incentives for complying with the new lockdown protocols. He also explained that only home quarantine with work stoppage can reduce the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, Labor Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez proposed that employers should release the 13th month pay of the employees whose livelihood sources has been affected by the community quarantine.
“If the companies have the funds, they could advance this. Under the law, those who have worked for one month are entitled to 13th month pay,” Benavidez said.
