Manila Government Install New York-Style Wi-Fi Hotspot
METRO MANILA – Thirty-four New York-style Wi-Fi hotspot terminals are underway in various locations in the City of Manila, particularly at the University Belt.
The Manila City government started to implement its goal of making the city a “Center of Convenience” and a “Smart City” by building thirty-four (34) Wi-Fi hotspot terminals. Previously, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno signed a deal that provides free Wi-Fi in six (6) areas in the city.
It will be recalled in August last year that the first free Wi-Fi hotspot kiosk was launched at the Bonifacio Shrine near Manila City Hall. The fiber-powered system has charging ports for mobile phones and can also be used for landline calls.
According to the Facebook page post of Manila Public Information Office, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said the concept came from LinkNYC Wi-Fi phone kiosks in Manhattan, New York.
On Wednesday, March 4, Mayor Isko, along with the head of the Department of Engineering and Public Works, toured the areas where Wi-Fi hotspots were located along España Boulevard, in front of the University of Santo Tomas, to the Quezon City border.
Setting up Wi-Fi hotspot terminals the University Belt (U-Belt) environment to benefit students. In addition to free internet access will also be installed additional CCTV cameras around the U-Belt to ensure the safety of students.
