Although there already was an official and proper announcement, there were still individuals who tried to leave for Kuwait. However, OFWs were advised to contact their agency and wait until the ban is lifted.

In addition to this, Ports Operations Division Chief Grifton Medina said that first-time travelers going to Kuwait shouldn’t take any chances to avoid inconvenience and rebooking expenses.

Mas maganda po sa lahat ng first time Kuwait-bound OFW na huwag nang subukang umalis pa para maka-iwas sa gastos sa biyahe at mataas na halaga ng airline rebooking fees.

According to Medina, an estimated round trip to Kuwait would cost close to P45,000 to P50,000 depending on the airline. Meanwhile, the rebooking fee cost is almost half the price of the ticket depending on seat availability.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, the ban on the deployment of Filipino household workers to Kuwait was done to expand coverage of new hires and those whose contracts have already expired.

The foreign ministry said that Kuwait is home to more than 262,000 Filipinos. Over 60% of that number are domestic workers whose remittances are a lifeline to the Philippine economy.

The ban was following reports that a Filipina maid, Jeanelyn Villavende was allegedly killed by her employers in December. This was after her repeated complaints of maltreatment and underpayment of salary.
