PHILVOCS – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that there are no expected tsunamis after the 6.6 magnitude quake in Mindanao.

Philvocs Director Renato Solidum said that residents can now return to their homes and assess damages. He then said that there is no tsunami to be expected.

This was because the quake that hit Mindanao was an “in-land” quake. However, they may be possible aftershocks, he added.

That is why he urged the residents to check their homes for cracks. He said that if there are any visible signs of structural damage, an engineer should check it out immediately.

With the impending fear of a tsunami insight, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio urged her constituents not to panic. She added that city engineers have given an all-clear for Davao City Hall.

The Davao City Mayor also suspended classes in every public and private school in Davao City. This allows officials to assess structural damages of infrastructures within the city.

Teachers and school officials were also told to report any damages they could find. She gave emphasis on surveying buildings that are in need of repair.

On Facebook, ABS-CBN News posted a video showing mall employees in General Santos City screaming. They were on the 5th floor of the building when the earthquake rocked parts of Mindanao.

Parts of Mindanao were recently rocked by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of the quake was in Tulunan, Cotabato according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs also said that aftershocks and damages are expected from the 6.4 magnitude quake that shook Cotabato. Currently, videos and photos in line with the incident are circulating on social media platforms.
