Commuters Exchange Their Plastic Bottles For Bus Tickets

COMMUTERS – The commuters in Surabaya City, Indonesia swapped their plastic bottles for a free bus ride to help reduce waste.

In a previous article, there is a store in Cebu City that accepts trash as payment for their products. The owner aims to help reduce the pollution issue in the world.

Surely, the Philippines is not the only country who thought about this idea. Some even organize a foundation and devote their lives to saving the planet earth.

Based on a report from South China Morning Post, commuters in Surabaya, Indonesia get free bus ride in exchange for trash.

The local authorities in the city are encouraging its’ town folks to use plastic bottles as payment for their bus rides.

“Now in the office, at home they are trying to collect it (plastic trash) instead of just throwing it away.”

According to the report, the local authorities claimed that nearly 16,000 commuters join this scheme every week. They gather about six (6) tons of plastic trash from the bus passengers each month.

The ticket officer, Edo Juanianto, talked about the improvement of their government’s project and how it affected their young children.

“Surabaya today is clean, there is less rubbish on the streets. So this program can also raise awareness among children so they will understand that such waste should not be thrown away,” he said.

Based on the report, their country is the world’s second-largest source of plastic waste in the ocean. The Indonesian government vowed to reduce 70% of their waste by 2025.
