Netizens react to Tito Sotto’s suggestion to change the last line of Lupang Hinirang
Senate President Tito Sotto suggested to change the last line of Philippine National Anthem Lupang Hinirang and this received reactions from netizens.
The lawmaker wants to change “ang mamatay nang dahil sa ‘yo” to “ang ipaglaban kalayaan mo.”
He reasoned out that the original line sounds “defeatist” which means one is ready to accept failure or defeat.
For Sotto, this should change to positive.
On the other hand, this suggestion from the Senator did not sit well to several netizens.
Based on a popular news site, here are some of the comments from social media users.
One netizen said that dying because of patriotism is one of the greatest sacrifices one could do.
“Kapag namatay ka para sa Bayan, iyon ang pinakamataas na uri ng sakripisyo na maibibigay mo. Pahiwatig ng “ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo” ay ang patuloy na pagbibigay natin ng lahat ng ating makakaya para sa Pilipinas. Samakatuwid, wala ng problema sa huling linya na iyan. Sakto nga ang pagkakalagay niyan e. Dulo pero pinakaimportante.”
“Hindi it is eternal, “ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo”, it is more than death its a pledge and sacrifice”
Another one pointed out that there is nothing wrong with Lupang Hinirang and that the problem is on corrupt politicians.
Walang diperensya ang Pambansang Awit…..ang problema eh yung mga politikong kurakot at sakim sa kapangyarihan….”
Furthermore, a social media user said that the last line of the national anthem describes perfectly the feelings of soldiers who are fighting for the country.
“Ask the soldiers and those protected/currently protecting our country how important this line to them.”
For a netizen, it is not fine to change the last line of Lupang Hinirang because of the principle “bayan muna bago sarili”.
“No! Cause some other races love their countries more than us that they will die for it, bayan muna bago sarili but we don’t even see that anymore. Tapos tatanggalin pa sa kanta. Wala na, finish na”
