New Golden Rice Variety Could Allegedly Help ‘Vitamin A’ Deficient People
The new golden rice variety could allegedly help people suffering from “Vitamin A” deficiency, however, some rice farmers oppose the new rice variety.
Oryza Sativa or known as the golden variety of rice is a product of genetic engineering to biosynthesize beta-carotene, which is a good source of vitamin A.
The golden rice was intended for the areas with a shortage of dietary vitamin A, which was allegedly taking the lives of about 670, 000 children under the age of 5 every year.
Recently, the YouTube channel “News5Everywhere” has uploaded a video introducing the golden rice, which is a new variety of rice that could allegedly help lactating mothers.
However, several scientists and farmers were opposing the golden rice stating that it was not yet proven and could possibly become a new Dengvaxia case.
The Bureau of plant industry said that the application of golden rice was not yet approved.
Phil Rice assured that the golden rice undergoes on international standard procedures before approval.
According to the field testing conducted by GR2E in 2015-2016, golden rice is safe for human consumption and it was just like ordinary rice with beta-carotene.
