Meet The 27-Year-Old Kabataan Rep. Sarah Elago, The Pauper In House Of Billionaires
Meet Kabataan Representative Sarah Elago, the poorest member of the House of Representatives, which was full of multimillionaires.
Sarah Elago is an activist youth leader from the Makabayan bloc and at the same time, she is a member of the House of Representatives. She was the poorest among the members, which are full of billionaires and multimillionaires.
The 27-year-old Kabataan Rep. reported that she has only an amount P50, 000 in assets and zero liabilities based on her statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN) for the year 2016, which is less than half the salary of the lawmakers.
Lawmakers usually earn a salary of more than P100, 000 monthly, but Elago’s assets show that she’s almost 140, 000 times poorer compared to other politicians such as the business tycoon Michael Romero who has P7 billion in his SALN.
The activist youth leader was earning a salary of P108, 000 monthly as a lawmaker under salary grade 31. She said that most of her salary goes to the activities of her group such as the free education advocacy and youth empowerment campaigns.
“Kabataan is not just a sectoral party-list, we’re also a national mass youth organization. [The] bulk of my income goes to support for various advocacy campaigns and use of such is collectively and democratically decided upon by our national executive council,” said by Elago.
Elago also admitted that she doesn’t have her own, instead, she was only renting a place and added that she was still single.
