State Of Calamity Declared In Barangay Sirao, Cebu City After Over 100 Houses Were Affected By Landslide

State of Calamity was declared in Barangay Sirao, Cebu City after around 100 houses were severely affected by a landslide last Sunday (April 09, 2017).

Over 100 houses in Cebu were affected by the landslide, which causes damaged to the barangay hall and sports complex of Barangay, Sirao. The residents affected by the landslide were transferred to Sirao Integrated School and Malubog Sports Complex.

Barangay Sirao in Cebu City has been declared under the state of calamity due to the landslide. Relief goods were immediately distributed to the affected residents, but they were also asking for financial assistance from the local City Government, according to Sirao Barangay Captain Felix Limotan.

Limotan said that the Departments of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) office will identify the residents, who will receive a financial assistance from the local government of the city.

Nagiel Bañacia of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) said that the resident of Brgy. Sirao in Cebu City should leave the area immediately as recommended by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said that the residents don’t need an evacuation, instead, they already need a relocation. He said that the area is in the danger zone, so the residents need to vacate the place for their own safety.

Landslide

An awareness program for the residents of Barangay Sirao who choose to stay in the danger zone will be conducted by CDRRMO after the Lenten Season. Banacia also said that the repair and reconstruction of the damaged road infrastructures will continue.

The Sirao Flower Farm continues to accept tourists, despite the landslide happened in Barangay Sirao.
