Vico Sotto Says Politics Should Not Be “Personality-Based”

Vico Sotto shared his thoughts on the situation of politics in the Philippines

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto stressed in a recent interview that politics should not be personality-based.

Mayor Vico is one of the most prominent political figures nowadays. Even though he is just in the local level, his popularity extends to other parts of the Philippines, and it is because of the changes he brought to Pasig City.

The Mayor is known for his good governance and transparency when it comes to the finances of the city. He would gladly report to his constituents through his livestreams or video presentations.

In a recent interview on the YouTube channel of Kapamilya broadcaster Bernadette Sembrano, Mayor Vico Sotto shared that ever since he was a kid, he was already interested in the government, and it is because of his older brother’s influence who taught him about this.

Despite the encouragement for him to run for a higher position, Mayor Vico has reiterated many times that after his term in 2028, he will not run for any position. He even mentioned that he wanted to return to teaching or work in private sector.

When asked how sure he is that what he started will continue, the Mayor said that the effectiveness of what he has done will put to the test once he is no longer in position.

“I believe in term limits. Kung talagang effective ‘yong ginawa ko ngayon….ang tunay na test diyan e ‘pag wala na ako. We should stop being too personality-based in our politics and our government,Mayor Vico stressed.

He also said that having no strong politcal parties that focus on ideology and issues because Filipinos are more on personality-based.

Wala tayong malakas na political parties na ideology-based o issue-based. We’re too personality-oriented. Hindi tayo do’n sa policy. ‘Yon yong nagiging weakness natin, e,” the public servant said.

On the other hand, he does not deny that his personality became a way for people to vote for him. It is because he is the son of prominent showbiz personalities, Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes, who have been very supportive of his political career.

He is also the nephew of former Senate President Tito Sotto and the grandson of former Senator Vicente Sotto.
