Dogshow Divas Macoy Dubs and Baus Rufo On Queerbaiting Content Creators: ‘Tigil niyo ‘yan’

Dogshow Divas Macoy Dubs and Baus Rufo call out these kinds of content creators online.

Dogshow Divas Macoy Dubs and Baus Rufo strongly called out creators who engage in “queerbaiting” in their content.

Queerbaiting is the “practice of incorporating apparently or potentially LGBTQ+ characters or relationships into a film, television show, etc., as a means of attracting or appealing to LGBTQ+ audiences, while remaining deliberately coy or ambiguous about the characters’ sexuality; (more generally) the practice of trying to appeal to and capitalize on LGBTQ+ audiences or customers in a deceptive or superficial manner.”

Recently, in a new episode of podcast Dogshow Divas, main hosts Macoy Dubs and Baus Rufo called out those who queerbait in their content, calling them out and urging them to stop exploiting LGBTQIA+ identities for content.

The two, always brave and honest, did not hold back in expressing their frustration over the growing trend among some straight content creators. Based on what they said, queerbaiting is when content creators hint at or mimic LGBTQIA+ relationships or identities to earn views but do not genuinely represent the community.

“’Yung mga straight na nagba-bakla baklaan na content, tigil niyo ‘yan,” Macoy emphasized, and Baus followed, “Queerbaiting. Tigil niyo ‘yan ha.”

Although they did not mention any specific content creators, they emphasized that the problem goes beyond individuals, highlighting a wider culture of performative representation in the online space.

“The queer people, anong tingin niyo sa amin — mga gatekeepers of culture kaya ‘yung mga straight people feeling niyo na lang ‘ay let’s pander to the gays because they are going to make us famous’? No,” Baus added.

The hosts said they are not trying to control content, but want people to be respectful in queer spaces. For them, being a true ally should come first before engaging in LGBTQIA+ stories.
