BPO Workers Urge DOLE to Ensure Safety of Employees Amid Disasters

A group of BPO workers is urging DOLE to take action and prioritize the safety of employees amid disasters.

A group of employees from various business process outsourcing (BPO) companies has called on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to take action and ensure the protection of workers’ rights during natural disasters.

The appeal came after reports that many BPO firms continued regular operations despite the dangers brought by Typhoon Uwan.

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, the BPO Industry Employees’ Network (BIEN), an independent workers’ group, criticized the “business-as-usual” approach of several companies while floods and strong winds affected large areas across the country.

The group said that many employees were still required to report to work, with little concern for their safety and welfare.

The petition listed 77 BPO companies that allegedly insisted on keeping operations open even during the height of the storm. Workers also complained about unfair work policies and lack of genuine concern from management.

BIEN stressed that the small considerations given to employees, such as minimal transport or internet allowances, were not acts of compassion but mere efforts to keep businesses running.

The group recalled that during Typhoon Tino, they had already filed complaints with DOLE regarding companies that forced employees to work despite unsafe conditions. However, they claimed that no action or updates have been made since then.

The lack of response prompted them to bring their concerns to the public.

BIEN urged DOLE to immediately intervene and remind companies to prioritize their employees’ safety over productivity. They also demanded that workers should not be penalized or forced to use leave credits when choosing to stay safe during disasters.

The group ended their petition with a warning that if neglect continues, they will not hesitate to publicly call out companies that put profit above people’s lives.
