Vico Sotto On Plan To Lower Age Requirement For Presidential Candidate

Mayor Vico Sotto was once again asked about his political plans

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto was asked about the plan to lower the age requirement for presidential elections.

Currently, the age requirement for president in the Philippines is 40 years old. Previously, Senator Tito Sotto said in an interview that they have been planning to amend the law regarding the age requirement for the highest government position in the country.

The Senate President said that they aimed to lower it to 35 years old. With this, many people started to speculate that Sotto wanted to pave the way for his nephew, Mayor Vico.

However, Tito Sen said that it was not like that and that it was just because it is now the younger generation’s time to lead the country.

In a recent interview on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Mayor Vico Sotto was asked to react to the intention to lower the presidential candidate’s age limit.

Pwede naman nilang ibaba, maghanap sila ng ibang kandidato,” the 36-year-old mayor said. To recall, after winning his third term as Pasig City Mayor, he said that he had no intentions to run for president in the 2028 elections.

When Jessica Soho asked he would not run when people are expecting him to do so, Mayor Vico said that people may not know that this intention was not really intended for him. He shared that no one asked him to run.

He reiterated his decision not to run in the next elections. Mayor Vico admitted that he did not know what he really wanted to do by that time, but he said that he wanted to teach, or study, or pursue other opportunities in the government, maybe in civil society.

With this answer, Jessica asked, “Are you for real, Mayor Vico?” The veteran journalist pointed out that he is now at the peak of his political career, and the people are looking up to him to be the next leader.

Mayor Vico Sotto said that it is not, and explained that people do not want traditional politicians. If he were to continue to be in politics, from term to term, always aiming for a higher position, people would also label him as a traditional politician.

“Kapag ganun din ako, I’m sure, after three years, ayaw na rin sa akin ng tao,” he said, adding that he would also despise himself when this time would come.

“Hindi naman kailangang maging elected official para magkaroon ng impact or para tumulong,” the Mayor said.
