Dolphins Spotted Before Earthquake in Eastern Samar

Dolphins Appears Near Shore Before Strong Tremor in Eastern Samar

Several dolphins were spotted near the shore and swam close to a passing pump boat before a earthquake hits Eastern Samar.

On Tuesday afternoon, September 2, 2025, the residents of General MacArthur, Eastern Samar were surprised when around 15 dolphins appeared before the powerful tremor in Eastern Samar.

The rare sighting happened at around 4:00 p.m. and caught the attention of the passengers, who said the dolphins almost bumped into their boat.

The playful sea creatures were seen leaping and swimming actively near Minalungon Island, just 1.2 kilometers away from the town proper. Locals found the event unusual, and many later connected it to what happened just hours after.

At 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, a Magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck General MacArthur, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake was recorded at a depth of 21 kilometers.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damages in the area. However, the timing of the dolphins’ sudden appearance left many residents wondering if the animals somehow sensed the tremor before it happened.

It is a common belief in coastal communities that marine animals can detect changes under the sea, including underwater disturbances, before people notice them.

The incident has sparked conversations among locals and online, with many sharing their awe at witnessing such a large group of dolphins so close to shore. For others, it was a reminder of how nature sometimes gives subtle signs before natural events occur.

While experts have yet to confirm any link between the dolphins’ appearance and the earthquake, residents consider the experience a rare phenomenon that shows the connection between humans, animals, and the natural world.
