Recently, DepEd announced they are to hire more teachers this year.
DEPED HIRING – The Department of Education announced that more teachers are needed before the school opening this year.
16,000 items or new teaching positions for public schools were approved by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for the school year 2025–2026. This is the first tranche of the target 20,000 positions in adherence to the directive of President Bongbong Marcos in strengthening the country’s education system.

The approved new positions are:
- 15,343 Teacher I posts (Salary Grade 11)
- 157 Special Science Teachers (Salary Grade 13)
- 500 Special Education (SPED) Teachers (Salary Grade 14)
Salary grade (SG) 11 or salaries ranging from Php 28,512.00 to Php 30,587.00; SG 13 with salaries from Php 32,870.00 to Php 35,141.00; and with salaries from Php 35,434.00 to Php 38,049.00, based on the DBM’s National Budget Circular in 2024.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) welcomed the move as a huge improvement compared to the past years, however, ACT chair Vladimer Quetua underscored that this is still a long way from the 150,000 needed to ensure quality education.
The funding for the new items will be sourced from DepEd’s built-in appropriations under the 2025 General Appropriations Act, amounting to Php 4.194 billion.
To recall, in a previous article, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian shared during a Senate Committee hearing on Basic Education that over 24 million Filipinos, from age ten to 64, are functionally illiterate, and 5.8 million are basically illiterate.
This means 5.86 million cannot read, write, and compute, while 24.8 million can read and write but cannot comprehend. DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara reacted, and according to him, his office is going to implement stronger interventions to remedy functional illiteracy among graduates.
Angara said, “Kaya’t lalo naming pinatindi ang mga intervention—mula sa remedial at literacy programs, hanggang sa mas epektibong paggamit ng datos sa bawat paaralan.”
