Update on Issue about Pasig Candidate Ian Sia’s Single Mom Joke

Pasig candidate Atty. Ian Sia insisted in his show cause order compliance that his statements fall within his “freedom of speech”.

Ahead of the May 2025 Elections, some election candidates have caught the attention of the online community due to various incidents. One of them is Atty. Christian “Ian” Sia who is running for congressman in Pasig City.

A video showing Atty. Ian Sia speaking at a caucus meeting circulated on social media and earned him countless criticisms. The bashing came after the Pasig candidate for congressman threw a “joke” about single moms.

The Pasig bet of the team Kaya This said that single mothers who still have their period and are lonely may sleep with him once a year. The crowd reportedly laughed at his statement and he, later on, clarified that he was only joking as he is married.

However, the joke of Atty. Ian Sia did not amused many netizens on social media. Some members of the online community called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to take an action. There are also netizens who claimed that it was an insult to the single mothers who work hard to support the needs of their children.

Amid the criticisms, Sia stressed that jokes must remain jokes and the serious matters should not include them. He also claimed that the election is not about him.

The Pasig candidate for congressman expressed his apology to the people over his ‘single mom’ joke. According to him, his intention was to awaken the seemingly bored audience and get their attention.

The Kaya This bet also claimed that the one who must be blamed is the uploader of the video. According to him, the uploader did not include a footage of the crowd laughing at his joke at the caucus meeting.

The Comelec issued a Show Cause Order against the Pasig candidate over his viral joke. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, in his response to the election organizer, the congressional bet claimed that his statements fall within his “freedom of speech”.

According to Sia, his statement was allegedly “maliciously spun to mislead people on social media”. He stressed that it was delivered in a conversational way without the intention to exclude ‘discriminate, exclude, restrict, or demean’ single mothers.

“My statements were not uttered to restrict or deprive female solo parents of their fundamental human rights and freedoms,” he said.

Previously, the viral Pasig candidate accused Mayor Vico Sotto and his allies of allegedly being the ones behind his joke getting the spotlight. The Pasig City Mayor smoothly denied it. Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up Shamcey Supsup left the team Kaya This following the Pasig bet’s joke.
