Drug trafficking refers to the illegal trade or distribution of controlled substances or illicit drugs. It includes manufacturing, transportation, and distribution of illegal drugs, which is considered a serious crime with severe legal consequences.

It is often associated with organized crime, violence, and corruption. Law enforcement agencies around the world work to combat drug trafficking through various measures, including arrests, surveillance, and international cooperation.

Involved individuals may face legal charges such as long prison sentences, heavy fines, and in some jurisdictions, even life imprisonment or the death penalty. The punishment often depends on the type and amount of drug involved, as well as the offender’s criminal history.

Recently, the authorities arrested a foreign national together with his live-in partner in Las Piñas City for attempting to smuggle illegal drugs during solar lights. The couple planned to send the drugs to Nigeria.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Special Task Force intercepted the couple’s vehicle. Inside the vehicle was a package containing several solar lights. When authorities opened the package, they discovered black plastic hidden within the lights.

An NBI chemist examined the plastic using specialized equipment and confirmed it contained methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu.

The Nigerian suspect was surprised when informed about the drugs, claiming that if he had known there were drugs inside, he wouldn’t have used his home address for shipping. He added that he had been asked to send the package to Nigeria.

The NBI informant revealed that the suspects had previously shipped drugs to their contacts in Nigeria. The NBI is currently determining the total value of the seized drugs.
