EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.5 magnitude quake in Leyte, July 31, 2024. Here are the details.

Following the 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Davao Oriental yesterday, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Leyte and it has a magnitude of 4.5.

The earthquake that struck Leyte, Wednesday, July 31, 2024, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Leyte was located at 10.69°North, 124.96°East – 009 km South 45° West of Abuyog. It had a depth of focus of 004 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that aftershocls are not expected from the said quake but there may be damages caused by the quake. According to the quake-recording agency, Intensity was felt in Abuyog, Leyte. The following instrumental intensities were recorded as well:

  • Hinundayan and Sogod, SOUTHERN LEYTE

Intensity II

  • Dulag, LEYTE

Intensity IV

  • Abuyog, LEYTE
